How to Season a Bland Lesson on Writing – For My ELA Teachers ✊🏾📚📝

Yo Fam,

I was in the classroom, ready to teach my listener how to write a body paragraph. Each part of the lesson was broken down into a simple recipe. Like James Harden with his iconic step-back jumper, I thought I was cooking. But that wasn’t the case. My students started to doze off, but not because they caught the “itis.” For those outside the culture, the “itis” is when individuals consume foods rich in fats, sodium, and sugars that they either go into a diabetic coma or blissful sleep. 😴🍗🍔 My students were bored. I could have gotten .38 hot, but I chose not to. Instead, I followed the rap god Rakim Allah's words and returned to the lab. 🎤🔁

I showed my students how to finesse the system by writing fast. It is incredible when students think you are teaching them something nefarious that no one else knows about. 😏 I told them to find quotes from their readings. Then, I had them rank the quotes from strongest to weakest. 💪🏾 I told them some professors grade you after reading a few paragraphs. Therefore, if they start strong, they can hide the weak stuff. I had them punch the keys hard so that they could get into the rhythm of writing. 🖊️💥

Next, I taught them how to analyze their quotes by pretending they were in a mock trial. They have to break down the evidence to prove their case. They love it because I told them it would help them win arguments. Who knew undergraduates like drama? 🎭 Finally, I taught them to write their topic sentences and transitions using clickbait to make the readers want to read the paragraph. 💥📝

It worked. I hooked my students. 🎣

Sometimes, you have to use what is familiar to the students to get them to learn the unfamiliar. Hence, this was how I learned to season a bland lesson. 🌶️
